Does My Kid Have Food Allergies?

So no, my kid as of now does not have any food allergies. His mama on the other hand, well, I have a TON of food allergies. I saw my allergist today and asked her what the likelihood of my son having allergies and she said 25%, not as bad as I thought. Me on the other hand, well I am allergic to RAW carrots, broccoli, apples, apricots, everything from the ocean, eggs, hazelnuts, and pecans. Now, some of these allergies are worse than other and therefore I do eat some of the things that I am allergic to. I can eat fruits and vegetables cooked, so things like applesauce is ok. I eat eggs just not very often. I do not eat anything from the ocean, that is the worst of my food allergies. Nutella and pecan pie is a no for me. Did you know that peanuts are not nuts? They are legumes, so no I do not have a peanut allergy.

Why am I telling you this? Because as someone who suffers from food allergies, I don't want the world to think that if someone with food allergies eats something they are going to die immediately, cause it just doesn't work like that. Allergies have a scale, and they progress, if you nip the reaction in the bud, then it won't progress to affect your breathing. That is why it is important to be prepared, I always allergy pills, prednisone, benadryl, and an epipen on me at ALL times. I have never had to use my epipen and my allergist says that most people do not end up ever having to use it, but you never know what the next reaction will be like.

I asked my allergist today when a good time to get my child tested, and she said not before 5 unless symptoms start to show. So what symptoms could she be talking about?

-Mild symptoms may include one or more of the following:
  • Hives (reddish, swollen, itchy areas on the skin)
  • Eczema (a persistent dry, itchy rash)
  • Redness of the skin or around the eyes
  • Itchy mouth or ear canal
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Nasal congestion or a runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Slight, dry cough
  • Odd taste in mouth
  • Uterine contractions
Severe symptoms may include one or more of the following:
  • Obstructive swelling of the lips, tongue, and/or throat
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing
  • Turning blue
  • Drop in blood pressure (feeling faint, confused, weak, passing out)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Chest pain
  • A weak or “thread” pulse
  • Sense of “impending doom”
Severe symptoms, alone or in combination with milder symptoms, may be signs of anaphylaxis and require immediate treatment.
Allergies can be very serious stuff and should always be diagnosed and treated by a doctor, but they should not make you fear food for yourself or your child. Know what your allergic to be and be prepared and ask questions. Don't be afraid to bring your own food place. Life does go on with food allergies, I know from experience.

Get Crazy with Crazy 8's Crazy Summer Sale!!!

I love crazy 8. I found the store one day in the mall on a whim and seriously bought way too much adorable clothes for my son. They are owned by Gymboree so you know the quality is good, but the prices are a little bit more affordable in my book.
Warmer weather is quickly approaching, but not as quickly as your kids grew out of last year's clothes! It's time to start stocking up on this season's styles for spring. Luckily, Crazy 8 is offering 20% off markdowns, up to 60% off at Crazy 8 so your kids can get everything they need (and some they don't!) without cleaning out your wallet. That's up to 60% off! The sale starts tomorrow (4/10) for a limited time, so hurry before it's gone!
